On June 13, 1691 a feast day in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua the Spanish expedition coined the name San Antonio for the area they were camped in. Payaya Indians occupied the near the San Antonio River Valley known as the San Pedro Springs. Yanaguana, meaning "refreshing waters" was the name the Payaya Indians used for the area that is now San Antonio, Texas.

Antonio de Olivares decided in 1709 decided to found a mission in the area along with a civilian settlement. The mission did not get approval from the viceroy until 1716. Approval for the mission and presidio was motivated to limit French expansion into the area from La Louisiane now Louisiana.  Martin de Alarcón the governor of Coahuila and Texas was directed by the viceroy to establish the settlement in the area now known as San Antonio, Texas.

Alarcón and Olivares apparently had differences about how the mission and presidio should move forward and the start of construction did not begin until 1718. Fray Antonio de Olivares worked with Payaya Indians to construct the Mission de San Antonio de Valero. This mission “Mission de San Antonio de Valero” now known has the “Alamo” is now one of San Antonio’s most visited tourist destinations. Bexar County began with these combined missions. The settlement in this area later became Villa de Béjar which was the most important town in Spanish Texas. In 1718 the governor passed ownership to Fray Antonio de Olivares. The Presidio San Antonio de Béxar was commissioned a few days later.
