The City Edinburg was first named Chapin in 1908 and is part of Hidalgo County. Named after one of the developers, Dennis B. Chapin. There were five developers and their names are, John Closner, William Briggs, Dennis B. Chapin, Plutarco de la Viña and Argyle McAllen. In Edinburg there is a myth that the town became the county seat of Hidalgo County in an unexpected, nighttime secret operation. Historical records however show that more practical reasons were the reason why the city is now the county seat. The previous county seat of Hidalgo County was under frequent danger of flooding because of being so close to the Rio Grande. Also under Texas law, it is required that the courthouse be in the center of the county geographically. Dennis Chapin was involved in the shooting death of Oscar J. Rountree at a salon in San Antonio, Texas. The community decided to change the name of the city to Edinburg to honor John Young, a well-known businessman that was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. The City was named officially in 1911 and incorporated in 1919.
In Education almost all of the city is provided by the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District, made up of 20 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 1 alternative school, and 4 high schools. Three schools by McAllen ISD also provide education. As of December 2012, officials announced a merger of the existing University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg and the University of Texas at Brownsville into a regional institute. After a year, in December 2013, the new institute was named the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Since Edinburg is the county seat of Hidalgo County, most county offices will be found there, like the Criminal District Attorney’s office, District and County Courts, Community Supervision and Corrections department, county juvenile probation department, and the county Sheriff’s Department.
