Wylie began to be organized in the eighteen seventies. Originally called Nickelville, believed to be the name of the first supply store in the area. Railroad Company laid tracks a half a mile from the original location of Nickleville. This prompted the proprietor of the Nickleville store to move to the location now known has Wylie Texas. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe rail line made the town successful.
After Nicklelle moved to the rail head location in eighteen hundred and seventy six it was incorporated forming Wylie Texas. Incorporated in eighteen hundred ninety seven the town was named for the right of way agent for the railway companies. A Civil War veteran William D. Wylie was a Lt. Colonel in the army. Wylie, Texas gained a post office within a year of being incorporated.
Two years after incorporating the Saint Louis Southwestern rails reached the town. This put Wylie in the fortunate position of being at the crossing of two railroads and caused growth of the town to about four hundred by eighteen hundred ninety. Located in the Blackland Prairies a fertile agriculture region Wylie has grown to occupy three counties. Wylie originated in Collin County and has grown to be not only in Collin County but Dallas and Rockwall counties also.
A school was formed in eighteen hundred ninety. By nineteen hundred the population of Wylie had grown to seven hundred and seventy three. Between nineteen hundred and nineteen hundred ten the population grew dramatically. By nineteen hundred and twenty Wylie supported thirty five businesses. Two of which were banks and a newspaper. Wylie area farmers grew onions in the nineteen thirties and forties. Wylie grew during the great depression unlike many rural towns across America.
Wylie near the growing population in Dallas also had several dairy farms that did well after world war two. Some of the business in Wylie would stay open has late as midnight which got it the nickname of “Wide Awake Wylie”.
