Fort Worth, Texas was established in 1849 has an Army outpost on a bluff looking over the Trinity River. Fort Worth is the sixteenth largest city in the United States. The city is the fifth largest in Texas. Fort Worth covers nearly three hundred and fifty square miles. The city limits extend in to five counties including Parker, Tarrant, Johnson, Denton, and Wise counties. Fort Worth is the Tarrant counties, county seat. The city has the honor of being the first to have a ship Navy ship named after it the “USS Fort Worth”.
The Mexican War prompted the establishment of a line of seven Forts to protect settlements in west Texas. The Forts included Fort Gates, Fort Worth, Fort Graham, Fort Lincoln, Fort Croghan, Fort Duncan and Fort Martin Scott. Major General William Jenkins Worth was who the original Camp Worth was named after. Major General Worth born in 1794 and he died from cholera in 1849. Major General Worth suggested ten forts shortly before his death. The Forts were planned from Eagle Pass to a location of the West Fork and Clear Fork joining of the Trinity River. General William S. Harney took over Major General Worth’s command. Major Ripley A. Arnold was ordered to locate a site and on June 6, 1849 a camp was established on the banks of the Trinity River that is now Fort Worth. The fort was moved from its original position after flooding to the top of a bluff. The county court house sits on the site where the fort was moved to in today’s Fort Worth.
A gentleman by the name of E. S. Terrell professed to be the first resident of Fort Worth. The original location of the Fort on the banks of the Trinity was flooded the first year. After the flood the Fort was moved to a North facing bluff to get out of the flood plain. The Tarrant County court house sits on that site today.
Fort Worth became a growing city when it became a favorite stop for cattle herders along the Chisholm Trail. The cities nick name “Cowtown” came along with continued growth.
